DeHaviland Chipmunk Flight!
I have been craving a flight in a DeHaviland Chipmunk for quite some time, and the Windsor museum folks were in Sarnia with a Harvard and the RCAF Chippy, so as soon as we got in the gate I signed up. The flight was about 15-20 minutes or so, and I was offered the controls as soon as we were in the air after some good conversation about aviation from my pilot (and my only prior experience at the controls of a Cessna 150 in calm air..) . It was turbulent today, throwing us about a bit, and I took the stick. A few good throws from the wind got me very well acquainted with the reputation that the DH Chipmunk has for great and fun handling! I loved the controls of this old plane. When the wind pitched us up and left, it was just instinct to correct down and right. I am glad now that I got to fly in turbulent air, and really get a feel for active flying. I was on a course near Lake Huron and followed up with a pass just south of the bridges, over chemical valley, then followed instruction for our route after that to get us lined back up for our approach. 120 MPH at 1800'. I am looking forward to some more stick time in the future. What fun! Click this link for specs!

An Easy Way To Resurface Worn Rocker Arms
Переглядів 3178 місяців тому
I came up with this easy way to resurface worn valve rocker arms. I had a flat bar of steel that was very straight, I polished the end 4" on the old surface grinder, clamped it to the bench grinder, and it worked out very well! Any flat, smooth bar will work, as long as it is square to the stone. It is easier when carefully using both hands to steady it, instead of one hand making the video.. h...

    In high school my buddy’s older brother had a red Scout. After a few off road shenanigans I fell in love with that thing. Found a Scout for $900 a few months later. Nothing wrong with it, 4wd still worked and it had the 345 in it. Never left me stranded, even after I screwed the transfer case. Many, many hours of fun and the top came off fairly easily. God that thing was tuff!!!

    Nothing sounds like a 2 stroke Detroit with that blower whine! I went to school on the 2 strokes back in the 80's and can't remember the specs, but isn't that blower about 2:1 overdriven? If so at high idle (about 2200rpms) the blower will be turning about 4400rpms. Correct? The Detroit's were a fascinating design. People that are not familiar with the Detroit design don't understand that it won't run without the blower, which is nothing more than an positive displacement air pump that fills a plenum around the pistons with air that enters the cylinder liners as the pistons travel down on the power stroke and the intake ports open. As the pistons go back up the ports close and you have the compression and power stroke. Like true 2 strokes they fire ever 360 degrees of crank revolution versus every 720 degrees for 4 strokes. This also inherently make them a dirty engine and somewhat smokey. There are 4 valves per cylinder, but they are all exhaust valves, so Detroit's don't need intake valves. The fuel injectors on a Detroit are true injector, and not just a nozzle like on a regular diesel with an injection pump. The injectors are cam driven by rocker-arms centered between the 4 valves. Great engines for turning diesel fuel into noise and smoke!

      The simplicity and durability are what drew me to them in the first place! Get fuel anywhere near them, and they will run, and perform! New, or worn out, they will get the job done.

      Hi Don! Ohio is a wonderful state to explore.. lots of great history! High and low pressure cylinders mean that it is a compound, or double expansion engine. High pressure steam goes to the smaller, high pressure cylinder, and the exhaust steam from that cylinder, at lower pressure goes to a larger cylinder. you get more efficiency and more work out of the steam. Large ship engines were typically triple or quadruple expansion!

  • @Inflec
    @Inflec 4 місяці тому

    In following this man's advice there is one big caveat regarding grounding the field (F) terminal of the generator. This should only be done on generators that use an externally grounded field (also known as an A-circuit field). There is also a B-circuit field, which is an _internally_ grounded field. In this configuration the connection to the F terminal must go to the hot (ungrounded) side of the battery, whether it's positive or negative, to get full output or to check the generator slowdown when motoring it. Ford used the B-circuit configuration almost universally in its vehicles which were equipped with generators. This would likely also be the case with its tractors. So it behoves anyone doing these tests to know what configuration your particular charging system uses for its field circuit.

      "battery positive" Is a general term that we use to identify the "hot" side of the circuit, no matter whether the system is negative or positive ground. Ground is always referred to as ground in both. "Battery Positive" jumped to the A terminal makes the generator "motor" no matter if it is positive or negative ground. If you were to ground that A terminal, nothing would happen.
